MT HERBERT RATES

Unchanged Levy

The same rate as last year, 0.7 of a cent in the dollar on the capital value, was proposed by the Mount Herbert County Council yesterday, after it had approved its 197071 estimates. The estimates provided for a total expenditure of $60,307 and for $34,415 of the revenue to come from rates. The major item of works expenditure was $20,000, estimated as the cost of reconstructing and sealing the first mile or so of the Purau-Port Levy Road. Provision was also made for the sealing of Zephyr Terrace, Governor’s Bay, and for work outside the Wheatsheaf Tavern at Teddington. Last year the council spent $71,665, and had a credit balance at March 31 of $1683. The chairman (Mr E. R. Radcliffe) said the National Roads Board had approved of the council’s three-year reading plan. This was gratifying, as it enabled the council to plan ahead for the Purau-Port Levy Road and other work.

Research Levy.—The council agreed to collect the Building Research Association levy of 50c per $lOOO on the value of building permits. The levy applies only oh values over $3OOO. Liable.—The council accepted responsibility for $75 worth of damage to a boat owned by Mrs M. J. Hempseed when rocks fell on it from road work at Charteris Bay, and referred the claim to its insurance company.
