ANIMAL GLANDS

Market From Waste?

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, May 22.

A considerable overseas market may result from combined scientific and business research into possible uses for products at present wasted from the New Zealand meat industry. This was said today by the National Committee of Science and Industry in the annual report of the Royal Society of New Zealand for the year ended March, 1970. The report said that about 18 months ago a small group of scientists suggested there might be a market for biochemicals, hormones, and enzymes extracted from the anima] glands, which are the by-products of the meat industry. Examples were the pituitary gland and the pancreas.

The committee said these glands were readily available in hygienic conditions and at low cost. It suggested that the economics of extracting biochemicals should be assessed with a view to marketing either in New Zealand or abroad.
