PRINTERS’ AWARD
Rates Increase 211 p.c.

WELLINGTON, May 22.
New Zealand printing-indus-try workers received a 21 j per cent increase in award rates in conciliation with employers in Wellington this week.
The increase amounts to up to about $lO in basic award rates, and includes “pass on” rates of up to $3.21 weekly for those receiving above (award rates.
[ The “pass-on” rate is an 'agreed increase for all workers covered by the award. It ranges from $3.21 for mechJanies through the “core-rate” (increase of $3.09 for compose I tors, to $1.83 weekly for adult [female workers in the industry.
“Core Rate”
The new agreement operates from the first pay-day after June 1. It increases the “core rate” from $41.15 weekly to $5O, with a “pass on” rate of $3.09.
Piece work and apprentice rates have been increased in ratio.
Mechanics will receive $52 under the new award minimum, with the maximum “pass-on" rate of $3.21. The “pass-on" rate is basically a ! cost-of-living bonus for workers in the main centres. I In the smaller centres, the new agreement is expected to [increase rates by figures round $8 weekly for many workers.
| From the top award rate of $52 for mechanics, the scale [goes down to $3O weekly for adult females.
