Eiffel Tower Fire
Firemen rushed up the Eiffel Tower in Paris yesterday as flames and thick smoke billowed out from the third floor. Crowds of tourists watched firemen running up hundreds of steps with their hoses after the lift had been stopped because of the blaze. The fire, which was believed to have started among electric cables in the 80-year-old tower. was brought under control after more than an hour.—Paris, May 20.
