WEEPING ELM
The weeping elm in summer and winter is shown in these photographs. The tree is Ulmiis glabra Camper-
downi, of which there are many excellent specimens around Christchurch.
The name Vilnius is the Latin name for the elm tree; glabra refers to the bark which, although downy at first, remains smooth for
mapy years; Cainperdowni is the varietal name given to it to perpetuate its origin from the grounds of Camperdown House, Dundee.
Ulmus glabra, the Scotch or wych elm, has the great advantage over the other
J species of elm in that it does ; not throw up suckers. For c this reason it is much used I as the stock upon which • others are grafted.
