NEWS FROM THE TRACKS

Riccarton Tumble, the winner of 12 races and close to $14,000 for his Stonyhurst breeder, .Mr J. B. Douglas-Clifford, will be retired from racing after running in the President’s Challenge Cup at Waimate tomorrow. One of the few of the stock of the Stonyhurst-bred Neptune horse, Overboard, racing, Tumble won four races in his first season, at three years. One of his best wins was in the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Waltham Handicap as a six-year-old two years ago. Last Saturday he was fourth in tlie Amberley Cup, a race he had already won twice. Tumble raced again at Riccarton on Tuesday, and showed he is thriving on a busy week’s programme by sprinttng half a mile in 50 2-ssec on the trial grass at Riccarton yesterday. Tumble appeared after a fog lifted. None of the other Waimate candidates could be timed. Black Out, an acceptor for the hurdles at Waimate, jumped slowly in a run over four hurdles. Treacherous started with her, but bumped G. Jackson to the ground at the second flight, leaving Black Out to finish alone. Treacherous’s stablemate Biggin Hill will not run in the Waitaki Gold Cup Handicap at Waimate. and E. G. Low has switched to Kophes. Celtic Chief, a double acceptor at Waimate, will not race at the meeting. Wingatui Indian Lady rounded off her preparation for the Waitaki Gold Cup at Waimate with a sound performance.

I The work was held under - ideal conditions. Most of the gallops were held on the outside course proper, which was cutting out. Indian Lady <B. L. Kennedy) was giving Mountain Lion (Muldrow) and Belling Lee <R. O. Cairns) six lengths start but she finished on to shade Belling Lee a length and a half behind Mountain Lion at the end of six furlongs in Imin 21 4-5-sec, the first three furlongs in 39 1-5 sec. Miss Mannequin (L. W. Hare) started two lengths behind Wairio (J. R. Dowling) and Camaro (C. S. Jones). She finished in line with Wairio. shading Camaro, at the end of five furlongs in Imin 5 4-ssec, the last three furlongs in 40sec. Tranquil Flight (C. McKewen) and Watallan iB. J. Anderton) ran a smart half-mile in 52 3-5 sec, the first furlong in 12 3-5 sec. Hastings Richman and Chill, rival candidates for the Weraiti Handicap at Masterton tomorrow worked impressively. The course proper trestles were well outside the proper distance from the running rail and the going was soft. Richman (J. Panapa) and Chill (B. Kirkc) were sent five furlongs and they completed solidly in Imin 8 2-ssec, the last three in 42sec. Astrella (R. Marsh) worked attractively over five furlongs in Imin 7 3-ssec, the last three taking 41 2-ssec. She is very forward. Awapuni The Riccarton visitors, Aeolian and Royal Blue came through final trials in good style. On the course proper Aeolian was doing better than Billy Joe at the end of five in Imin lOsec, the last three in 42 4-ssec. There was very heavy rain overnight and fast times were out of the question. Royal Blue and Gold Mint were clear of Dee Cee Nine at the end of a mile in Imin 57 2-ssec, the last three in 43 4-5 sec.- Royal Blue was working strongly at the finish. Extra Fair galloped well to shade .Santide at the end of half a mile in 55sec, the last three in 41 2-ssec. Extra Fair looks ready for a good effort at Masterton. Wanganui Royal Personage and His Lordship were the best performers yesterday. On the heavy No. 1 grass, Royal Personage and Velocette struck out keenly. They worked from the 10 furlong mark coming over the last half-mile in 53Jsee, the last three in 40sec. Royal Personage, d steeplechaser at Masterton, took the outside running and his effort was quite commendable. Woodville Highlights of the fast work at Woodville were a smart mile by Josie Glow and a solid gallop over six furlongs by Free Pass and Cannes. The track was really heavy where the work took place, some 60ft from the rail on the course proper. Josie Glow ran a mile in Imin 54 3-ssec, the last six in Imin 24 3-ssec and the final three in 42 2-ssec. Prince Camelot tried to join in at the six, but Josie Glow went right past her stablemate and was restrained over most of the gallop, but still I won it by 15 lengths.
