AUCKLAND, May 12.

New thinking on the designing of buildings to withstand earthquakes was called for by Professor N. A. Mowbray, of the School of Engineering, Auckland University, at the opening of a seminar of geotechnical aspects of earthquake engineering. Not enough attention had been given to the geological nature of the ground beneath and adjacent to structures, he said. Engineers had made considerable studies of the response by buildings to earthquake shock, and had relied largely on rather “wobbly” codes of zoning.
