Slow-Motion Boxing From Professionals

A slow-motion first round between the old professional, D. Murphy, and the new, G. Fitzsimmons, in a smiling, hand-shaking excuse-me, exhibition bout, roused little enthusiasm from a standing-room-only crowd of 350 at the boxing tournament in Sumner last evening.

Murphy, after a lay-off of nearly five years, showed some of the magic in his left

hand and the perfect balance that enables him to put all his

weight behind his punches Fitzsimmons, longer in reach, scored well with a straight left lead. However, although both boxers speeded up in the third round, it was nothing more than a not very good spar. Mr M. Maunsell, the referee, did not add to the entertainment by frequently instructing the boxers to indulge in practice in-fighting. The amateurs, while not as good boxers, fought to win, and fought hard. B. Kendall, the Commonwealth Games boxer, and P. Hindmarsh had a good workout. Kendall scored two-to-one with his brilliant counter-

f punching, in what was only 1 a sparring match. t The boxing, with over-

sized practice gloves, warmed up in the third round when

■ Hindmarsh, a stone heavier, taught Kendall that he must keep his gloves up on defence. Hindmarsh scored twice with good right crosses, but even then Kendall got two | points back with his left and used the left rip to score with considerable force.
