Stricter Control Over Traffic Suggested
The Metropolitan Road, Safety Committee will be asked to consider suggestions by the Waimairi County Council for better traffic control and stricter enforcement. “It is time a fresh look was taken at the problems that cause this shocking road toll," said the chairman (Mr D. B. Rich). The council’s traffic committee reported to a meeting of the council last evening that Mr Rich had suggested that the matters be taken up with the Road Safety committee by the council’s member, Cr W. T. Rice. Mr Rich raised three points: An increase in the national traffic-enforcement budget to provide more enforecement officers: 1 The question of bad drivers I I—ishould all people have the I right to hold a driver’s! licence? and The question of a person’s! powers of perception being I tested as well as his or her! eyesight. , Cr W. R. Holmes said that the breathalyser legislation should be studied with a view to a tightening up. Cr A. A. Adcock said he was concerned at the apparent lightness of some court sentences—but Cr Holmes pointed out that penalties were indicated by the evidence, and were for the court to determine.
The senior traffic inspector (Mr I. W. McLauchlan) said that the breathalyser procedure was being studied by the Ministry of Transport.
Cr Rice said he would bring the questions before the Road Safety Committee.
