Local Petrol Tax?
Sir, —The motoring organisations are protesting at the proposed petrol tax to defray what will obviously be the high cost of new motorways —a responsibility which must otherwise fall on ratepayers. Many of the latter, through age or infirmity or both, have been obliged to give up their cars. On the other hand, there must be a considerable number of motorists—tenants in flats or State houses—who pay no rates at all. This state of affairs is grossly inequitable. Could not a special rate be imposed on ail owners of motor vehicles who are not on the list of householders, but are known through the licensing authorities, to be paid within the same time limit as other municipal rates? It might make the council unpopular, with the owners of any vehicle from a “bomb” to a Jaguar, but it would uphold an elementary
