FROM STUD AND STABLE Classic Win Before End Of Famous Racing Empire

For 40 years until his death last February Hirsch Jacobs was acknowledged in the United States as a genius among the ranks of racing’s professionals.

His death brought the first step towards the dissolution of the famous Bieber-Jacobs empire, a step happily not finally taken before Personality won the Preakness Stakes, the second gem of the American Triple Crown, last week-end.

The partnership will end some time this summer when all the stock. Personality included, will be sold to dissolve the long-term agreement. All the horses, which have raced in the name of Mrs Jacobs, her daughter Patriee, and for Isidore Bieber, now aged 88, have been owned jointly by the Bieber-Jacobs stable and have been on lease to the individuals. Personality won last Saturday’s classic in the colours of Mrs Ethel D. Jacobs, who has been America’s leading owner tn races won three times. Personality’s sire, Hail To Reason, was the champion two-year-old in the United States in 1960, the only year he raced. Hail To Reason was sired by Turn-to, which was never unplaced in six starts.

Turn-to was by Royal Charger, a three-parts brother by Nearco to Nasrullah. This is the male line of Phalaris. Hail To Reason, whose career was ended by injury when in the midst of a highly successful two-year-old season, earned $328,000. He has been an outstanding success at stud, siring the champion two-year-old filly of 1966, Regal Gleam, and America’s champion filly of 1967, Straight Deal. Hail To Reason also sired the clasic winners Hail To AU, winner of the Belmont Stakes, and Proud Clarion, a Kentucky Derby winner. Rich Line Affectionately, dam of Personality, descends from La Troienne (by Teddy), the most successful matron bought for America this cen tury. Affectionately was a national sprint champion which also won stakes races at middle distances. She was the richest offspring of the great Swaps, sire also of the Derby and Belmont winner Chateaugay, and of Primonetta, the champion handicap filly or mare Of 1962. Affectionately won more than $546,000. She was produced by Searching, the daughter of War Admiral and Big Hurray, by Black Toney, which won numerous races and nearly $3300,000.

Big Hurry, a sister to the champion filly Black Helen and the champion three-year-old and classic winner Rimelech, was also a half-sister to stakes winners in Biologist and Bee Mac. Like Father? Personality is trained by the 35-year-old John Jacobs, who lived in the shadow of his famous father for 15 years before he took control of the stable a few months ago.
