U.S. Pro. Named In Squad

The captain of the American professional Boston Celtics basketball team, J. I lavlicek, has been named in a list of 18 players to play in two invitation teams against the South Island trialists in Cowles Stadium on Saturday evening.

It will not be known until Havlicek arrives in Christchurch on Saturday morning whether he will play in one of the invitation teams or for a period in both.

There is a fear that Havlicek’s brilliance might overshadow some of the triaiists, all seeking places in the New Zealand team to play against the Czechoslovakian tourists, if he is used for too long in one game. “I will switch him round a bit so that he is not marking any one player for too long," Mr G. D. Dempsey, the Canterbury selector-coach said yesterday. Among the 18 named are all 'available members of the Can-

I terbury squad who were not ( chosen for the trial. Some of these, especially B. Good- ’ win (Checkers) and the pro- ! inising young player, S. Fer- > guson (Christchurch 8.H.5.). .'might well force their way l into consideration for the ISouth Island team to meet the North in a final trial at Wellington on June 13. Former Top Players Spectators will also have a rare opportunity to see a number of Canterbury’s lead ing representative players of by-gone days in action to-1 gether. In this category are the former New Zealand trial--Ist, W. E. Smith, J. Edyvean (both Old Maroons), R. Spark (Rangiora) and K. Baker (Checkers). Two invited to play in the teams, K. Luxton (Old Boys), and J. Lorentz (Old Maroons) were not available. Luxton, a Canterbury representative, split his right index finger during a club practice on Monday and the wound required four stitches. The 18 players will not be divided into teams until they assemble at Cowles Stadium on Saturday. Those chosen are: Edyvean, Smith (Old Maroons); Spark, B. Borren, G. Phillips (Rangiora). M. Gleason, K. Milligan (Old Boys), Ferguson (Christchurch B.H. S.): G. Nobbs, B. Goodwin, K. Baker, R. Dew, L. Haysom (Checkers); R. McCormick (Burnham); D. Symonds, B. Hepenstall (Y.M.C.A.); P. Riddell (University).
