A Team’s Decisive Squash Win

Christchurch A decisively won its key match against Christchurch B when the A. grade squash rackets competition continued last night.

Christchurch B’s only win was scored by its near veteran, L. G. Milne, who siiowed surprising stamina to outlast P. C. Angland in the fifth game of a highly entertaining match. Points now are: Christchurch B 40, Christchurch A 36, Old Collegians 29. High School Old Boys A 28, University B 16, University A 12, High School Old Boys B 18, Christchurch C 14, Christ’s College 13. Old Collegians, lying in third position, played Christ’s College without C. C. Kissling, and drew 5-alk T. L. Williams had been playing well against J. H. N. Pine when, at the beginning of the fourth game, he ran into Pine’s racket and suffered a cut above his eye which later necessitated four stitches.; Williams carried on to finish the match but was only a shadow of his former self.

The result of this match depended on the last game between A. P. S. Robinson and L. G. Holder. Robinson, an improving junior player, managed to win the one set required to deny Old Collegians victory, but he could not match the guile of the experienced Holder, who won the next three to ensure the tie at seven games all. D. R. Preston (Christchurch A), fresh from his victory in the South Canterbury autumn tournament at the week-end, playe immaculately against B. V. Hamilton (Christchurch B). Thriving on Hamilton's mediumpaced drives in the first game, he raced away to an easy 9-2 win.

In the aacond game Hamilton

slowed the play, forcing Preston to make his own pace, and for a short period there was little between the two. Then Preston speeded up his shots, drawing Hamilton into driving duels, and it became almost a procession, which continued through the third game. Angland and Milne provided one of the brightest games this season. Both have a good range of shots and there was considerable variety. Although they played many drop shots, ‘they were also quick to go to] the walls with defensive drives I [when in trouble. i Milne had a match point at ' 8-7 in the fourth, and when he lost this game his chances of j victory seemed slight, but he| quickly went to 5-0 in the fifth; with well-controlled drives and [ drops. In spite of a recovery | by Angland to 4-5, Milne again! took control to finish the match with a drop into the nick.

Christchurch C and High School Old Boys were level, twoall in matches, but Old Boys won by 8 games to 6. J. S. Crosbie, playing top for the Christchurch C. found J. W. Mitchell in top form, but good length driving and a minimum of errors allowed A. E. Dunlop (Christchurch C) to come from behind against G. Jenkinson.

A surprise result in this match was the three-set win.of the young J. Tolchard (Old Boys) over R. G. Pattinson. who was unable to match Tolchard's speed and fitness. Results:
