Temporary Buildings

Sir,—lt was very interesting to read that more building is under way for university needs at Ham. But I would like to know when the university is going to remove the hideous collection of "temporary” buildings at Worcester Street. Some have been there since the last war and shrubs do not make them any more attractive. If accommodation is so needed there, surely they could be demolished and stone ones erected to match. A neighbouring college has done this, so the excuse that there are no stonemasons just does not bold water.—Yours, etc., MOMU. May 13, 1970. [Mr G. G. Turbott, registrar of the University of Canterbury, replies: “The university is concerned about the existence of temporary buildings on its city site and is applying all the pressure it can to obtain the necessary buildings to speed up the move to Ham. In the meantime, there are already more students on the city site than at -any time previously and, unless severe entry restrictions are imposed, it is necessary to use the temporary buildings. It would obviously be a waste of public funds to replace temporary buildings with ones built in stone.”]
