Cricket goes commercial
(From G. ARTHUR, London Correspondent of “The Press"] TZENNINGTON OVAL, the v Surrey County Cricket Club’s ground in south-east London, is being “developed” into a commercial centre as unlike the traditional village green as it if possible to imagine.
Planning permission has now been granted by the Greater London Council for the inclusion of a 480-bed-room hotel in the £4 million development scheme for the perimeter of the oval. As well as the hotel there will be 292 flats (two-bed-
room, single-bedroom and bachelor flats), a shopping centre to include eight shops and a supermarket on the northern side of the ground, and landscaping of the surroundings “where space permits.”
The club’s own amenities are also being brought up
to date with the entire rebuilding of club facilities, the provision of seating for 18,000 spectators and 4000 members, restaurants for spectators, members and players, new dressing-rooms, committee rooms and press and commentary facilities. A model of the complex is pictured above.
