Mr Trudeau’s Visit
Sir,—This letter is to express my annoyance on reading your front-page paragraph referring to my daughter, Stephanie Smith, Christchurch Girls’ High School, as saying: “I think he’s a real gas.” This is untrue, and is an insult to my daughter’s
intelligence. She was only asked at the time for her name, and school, and if she had been asked for her opinion of Mr Trudeau could certainly have thought of more appropriate words to express her admiration of the Canadian Prime Minister.—Yours, etc., R. L. SMITH. May 14, 1970. [Mr Smith is both right and jprong. Our reporter agrees that when he asked Miss Smith her impressions of Mr Trudeau, she replied that she admired him tremendously. It was in subsequent exchanges of light-hearted remarks between the girls and Canadian and New Zealand journalists that the remark in question was made. Our reporter, whose school-age daughters keep him abreast of modern idiom, thought he recognised this as a colourful but sincerely-meant tribute to Mr Trudeau. We regret any embarrassment caused by the reporting of the remark.—Ed., “The Press.”]
