Multi-Linguists And School Mottoes
Most of the secondary schools in the Christchurch area have Latin mottoes. Three schools, Linwood, Mairehau and Rangi-Ruru, have Maori mottoes, and two, Sacred Heart and St Mary’s, have their mottoes in English.
Latin mottoes are tradttional for schools, but their meanings are often forgotten by pupils, and sometimes are never really explained to them. A correspondent, Mr C. E. Wrighton, in a letter to “The
Press” asked for the mean- ’ n S of the Latin words on children wore blazers with school mottoes they could not translate. Mr Wrighton also asked for a translation of the motto of
"The Press” (it is “Nihil utile quod non honestum,” or “ Nothin S useful which is honest ). These are the Latin and Maori mottoes of secondary schools in the Christchurch area:

Not fearing difficulties. Follow the highest. Thus guide your path aright. Thus knowledge unites us. I seek higher things. Wisdom and truth. What is useful is honourable. A good character brings its own reward. Seek. Be fragrant with wisdom, Happiness in work. Learn that you may be of service. < It is in the interest of all to do right. Good traditions, good service. One heart. Seek the heavenly things. My faith and my country. By faith and work. Blessed are the pure in heart. Round off your knowledge with courage. That vou may choose what is of value. For Christ and father land. »
