INCREASED STAKES

(N.Z. Press Association) MELBOURNE. Winter jumping in Melbourne has been boosted with the announcement of big increases in stakes for the Australian Hurdle and the Australian Steeple. Prize money for the hurdle will be lifted by the V.A.T.C. from $4OOO to $7500 and for the steeple from $6OOO to $lO,OOO. The hurdle will be run at Caulfield on August 1 and the Steeple at Sandown a week later. Linked with the $20,000 Grand National events at Flemington in July they will make an important jumps double. The increased prize money can be expected to act as a further lure to New Zealand owners and trainers to campaign in Melbourne.
