Watersiders’ Ballot Not Yet Counted
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 14. The result of Wednesday’s national ballot by waterside workers on acceptance of new working conditions will not be known until next week.
Under the constitution of j the Waterside Workers' Federation, the 20 unions, which took part in the ballot have until Saturday to forward completed ballots to the' i national returning officer. I The ballots are not ex-
ipected to be counted before Monday. j Details of the proposed new working conditions have not I yet been released, but the president of the Auckland ■ Waterside Workers' Union (Mr P. Lenaghan) has indicated that the introduction of j a permanent labour force, wet weather work for certain ‘cargoes, and a supplementary shift are among the provisions. | The Auckland and Wellington unions did not take part lin Wednesday’s ballot, and iare known to be opposed to I the new conditions. ; The Wellington union considered that an earlier balJ lot, in which union members I had overwhelmingly rejected | the proposals, had made a (further ballot on Wednesday i unnecessary.
