Angus Entries Top Competition
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 15. The Angus breed’s five entries topped the scoring at the national beef-steer competition at Wanganui this week. The competition was held in conjunction with the Land and Industry Exhibition there. The competition was aimed at finding the beef steer most suitable for the local trade. Twenty-five entries, five from each breed and five in a crossbred class, entered the final. The Angus entries were more than 100 points clear of the second breed. Total points were: Angus, 1503 points; crossbred. 1391; Hereford, 1380; Galloway, 1243; beef Shorthorn, 1089. Detailed Results In the steer competition, the carcases were judged after slaughter, the judges not knowing which breed they were assessing. Results were: J. G. Laws (Levin), Galloway steer carcase, weight 5381 b, meat-yield of 70.7 per cent, auctioned on the hoof for $ll4. 1. L. Baker's (Whakatane) Angus steer, carcase weight 5391 b, meat-yield of 69.5 per cent, auctioned on the hoof at $l6O, 2.
