Mr Trudeau’s reputation preceded him in Christchurch. When he was welcomed as the first overseas Prime Minister to be received in the Christchurch City Council Chambers, the Mayor (Mr A. R. Guthrey) last evening told him that when the guest list was being considered the Town Clerk (Mr M. B. Hayes), had asked: “What about the wives?” He had looked up in surprise and said: “You mean, what about the husbands?” When he Judged a beauty contest recently Mr Guthrey was told by a girl that she did not know the name of the Mayor of Christchurch.
