Less Pressure Towards Speech Competitions
Persons who took speech and drama training today were using it to further their careers and improve their everyday speech rather than to win competitions, Mrs E. M. Grut, of Waimate. said last evening’. ,
Mrs Grut was the judge ofi the speech and drama section I of the Christchurch Competi-| tions Society's annual festival. The section finished last night. * “There is a big change in outlook tn speech training,” Mrs Grut said. “The emphasis today is on speech for everyday purposes.” It Was probably for this reason that entries were down, she said. Mrs Grut said she was reluctant to make comparisons in standards with other areas, as the quality of the competitors was not always indicative of the work being done in the centre. Results of yesterday’s competitions were:— SRUCH AND DRAMA (Judge. Mrs E. M. Grut. Waimate) Junior recitation (10 years and under 12). Elizabeth Owens 1, Karen-Anne Howard 2, Susan Powell 3.
