RUSSIANS IN EGYPT
‘Pilots Sent To Man Jets’
(N.Z. Pfeng Assn.—Copyright) WASHINGTON, May 14. About 100 Russian pilots have been sent to the United Arab Republic in recent weeks to man three or four squadrons of jet interceptors, according; to American and other Western intelligence analysts quoted by the New York Times News Service.
The analysts say that this is in addition to 70 to 80 Russian pilots who have long been training Egyptian pilots in Egypt. The new complement of sory force that now numbers between 8000 and 10,000 men, may well grow further, highranking analysts say, if the Soviet Union continues to play a larger role in air defence over the heavilypopulated Nile delta region, which includes Cairo and Alexandria. As the Nixon Administration decides whether to provide additional Phantom jet fighter-bombers to Israel, officials are debating whether an affirmative decision would tend to calm or exacerbate the Middle East situation. A decision on the American aircraft is expected soon.
