ADDIAGTON MARKET Store Stock Values Fully Firm

Store lambs met a free sale at the Addington market yesterday. With some interest from freezing buyers there were a number of sales approaching $7 in a yarding which was generally typical of an end-of-season sale.

Values for store calves opened on an easier level, but once the market got under way, they became fully firm to $3 stronger than last week. There was fairly strong buying interest from the West Coast as well as local districts.

The store sheep yarding was 7025 compared with 7130 last week and consisted of 1 4100 wether lambs, 1915 ewe lambs, 150 two-tooth ewes, ■ 560 adult breeding ewes, and , 300 wethers.

Store Lambs

In spite of a wintry break in the weather at the week-end, the store lamb market was a very sound one. The sale opened on an easier tone, but as the buying gallery built up, values firmed, and for the rest of the day were well up to last week's rates.

While the yarding was typical of a lale-season offering, it included a selection of sum-mer-shorn Romneys which met a good inquiry. The best of these sold from $6.50 to $7.15, medium from $5.80 to $6.30. and small down to $5.20.

Best flne-woelled wether lambs sold from $5.80 to $6.20, with one sale at $6.55; average from $5 to $5.60. and small from $3.80 to $4.70.

Several pens of well-grown, even-woolled halfbreds were in* eluded in the ewe lamb entry. These met a satisfactory salt, but the small and plainer ewelambs continued to sell at about wether lamb rates.

The pick of the fine-woolled ewe lambs sold from $7 to $7.70, with good average from $6 to $6.50. medium $5.30 to $5.80. and small from $3.40 to $4.40.

Store Calves

A large gallery followed the store calf sale and apart from the early stages, values were fully firm to $3 stronger on last

week's good rates. There was again particularly good inquiry for a small entry of back-coun-try calves which came forward in very good order. Angus and Angus-Hereford cross calves made up the bulk of the entry. The yarding was 716, compared with 865 last week. Adult Cattle More Ilian usual interest was attached to the adult store cattle section, for it included a line of mated beef-bred heifers, a class of beast rarely seen offered as a line at Addington. Numbering 142 head, the heifers, which had been mated in December, were offered on account of the St James Station (Hanmer Springs). They met a strong inquiry, prices ranging from $lO3 to $125 for a pen average of $ll4 50. Most were taken by Canterbury buyers, with others to the West Coast and Oarnaru. The breeding cow yarding was the best of the season. It included the annual consignment from the St James Station Hanmer Springs These cows, mated tn November, were in very good order, and they sold accordingly, with prices ranging from $lOO to $ll4. Some useful breeding cows were also included in the remainder of the yarding, and

it was clearly apparent that; cows which had been pregnancy j tested had a much better sale than those sold simply as; "mated.’’ Over all, breeding cow values were $5 stronger,; but this partly because quality was better.

The store cattle yarding was, 690, compared with 865 last' week.
