Attack On Prices
Two moves to attack spiralling prices have been made ■by Canterbury labour organisations this week. The Canterbury district. council of the Federation of Labour has decided to spon-j sor the formation of a Christchurch branch of the Cam-{ paign Against Rising Prices, > and the Canterbury branch of the Public Service Association has formed a consumers and prices sub-committee. The Canterbury chairman of the P.S.A. (Mr J. 0. Trevor) said yesterday that its subcommittee would keep! a dav-to-day check on adver-l tised prices over a wide range | of goods and make a monthly | survey of the situation. Mr Trevor said that every; time there was a wage in- 1 crease the businessmen | “hopped on the waggon" for increases out of all proper-■ tion. For example, the in- ' crease in the price of flour amounted to little more than!' half a cent a pound, but shops b were charging another cent! if or a single sandwich. “To us, this is completely ) ridiculous,” said Mr Trevor j "And it’s also exploitation ; Wage-earners can’t pass this) increase on to anyone. They’ have to pay the lot.”
