Visa To Aust. Refused
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) CANBERRA, May 13.
j Dr Ernest Mandel, editor iof the Belgian Socialist [weekly, "La Gauche,” has [been refused a visitor’s visa by the Australian Government.
Dr Mandel was to have attended a Socialist scholars’ conference in Sydney later this month, and to have given lectures in Melbourne and Adelaide. In the Federal Parliament yesterday, Opposition Labour member, Senator John Wheeldon, said that there could be no reason for the Government's refusal “other than to inhibit free discussion in this country to stop dissemination of ideas which do not agree with those of this Government.” He added that Dr Mandel had travelled extensively, had lectured in American universities, and had written a book on Marxist economics and another called “Europe versus America.”
