SIHANOUK’S GOVT
Altitude Of France (N Z P.A.’Reuter—Copyright) • PARIS, May 12. The French Foreign Minister (Mr Maurice Schumann) has indicated that France was not at present ready to recognise the Cambodian gov-emment-in-exile formed by the deposed Head of State, Prince Norodom Sihanouk, in Peking. In a radio programme, Mr Schumann praised Prince Sihanouk’s policy of neutrality when he was still in power, and said that contacts were still being maintained with him in Peking. But when asked whether France would recognise the Cambodian government-in-exile, he replied: “The problems of today are not posed in the same terms as those assigned to them by the diplomatic vocabulary of another era.” He said the French Government’s primary duty was to protect its citizens in Cambodia of whom there were several thousand. Asked whether France was aiding the Phnom Penh Government of General Lon Nol he said: “After the advent of the new regime we have stopped all arms delivery to Cambodia.”
