MORE BIRD DEATHS
Pesticide At Maheno (N.Z. Press Association) OAMARU, May 11. * Magpies and starlings—essential in keeping grass grub down—were dying by scores as a result of his use of the pesticide, Dasanit, based on the chemical, Fensulfothion,' a North Otago farmer reported today. The farmer, Mr R. C. Robinson, of Maheno, said that dead and dying birds were being found a mile and more from an area which he treated experimentally with the pesticide last Thursday, to combat grass grub. The dead birds included a hawk which had been eating a dead magpie, he said. The grass grub, however, seemed little affected five days after the application of the pesticide. When he approached a treated area, said Mr Robinson, a flock of starlings rose into the air. Four dropped dead from a height of a few feet. A Department of Agriculture officer will investigate 1 the bird deaths.
