Peace Prize Winners

The winners and place-get [ ters in the essay and poster competitions run by the Christchurch Rotary Club on the theme of “World Peace., Through World Understand ing” were presented with their prizes at a club luncheon yesterday. The two competitions were run simultaneously and the winner of each will have a trip to Wellington where they will be the guests of the Wellington Rotary Club While in Wellington they will be taken on a conducted tour of Parliament by the Minister of Tourism (Mr Walker) The first two essays in the essay section were read at the luncheon by the radio and television personalities Kerry Stevens and Mary Dick. The club president (Mr R. A . Ayton), who presented the! prizes, noted that all place-! getters in the competition, were girls. Pupils from eight Christchurch secondary schools took part. The winners were:—Essdy: Catherine O'Rourke (Cottes more College), 1; Marjory Walker (Rangi-ruru Girls' School), 2: Helen Sides (Middleton Grange School), 3; Posters: Deborah McPherson (Rangi-ruru Girls' School), 1; Karin Wohlert (Riccarton High School), 2: Carolynne Mackwell (Avonside Girls’ High School) 3.

$6OO Bequest A bequest of $6OO to the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust by the late Mr Monk, of Raetihi, was announced yesterday by the trust's chair-, man. Sir Thaddeus McCarthy, The trust gives financial assistance to enable people to go overseas and study sub-; jects for which this assistance is not normally provided Sir Thaddeus McCarthy said that Mr Monk's gift was veryencouraging to the trust and all the more appreciated because devaluation and rising costs had affected its ability to send people abroad to study. 1
