The Estuary
Sir, —May I express my concern about the pollution of the Estuary by the “fully treated” effluent of the Drainage Board oxidation ponds? Because of the unsatisfactory position of the oxidation pond outlets, most of the effluent flows up the Avon River every incoming tide, as evidenced by the discoloured and sometimes foamstreaked water. Would the Health Department please advise if the boating public are
(exposed to health risk by boating in Estuary waters discoloured by oxidation pond effluent?—Yours, etc., RATEPAYER.
April 29. 1970. (Mr P. J. McWilliam, chief engineer of the Christchurch Drainage Board, replies: “Regular analyses of the effluent from the oxidation ponds are made. There is considerable dilution of the effluent in the Estuary and it is considered that the treatment, along with this dilution, provides reasonably safe waters for the boating public. The foam your correspondent refers to is due to detergents.”]
