India struck the first blow by winning the opening singles in its Davis Cup, eastern zone tennis final against Australia yesterday. Its No. 1 player, P. Lal, beat R. Ruffels, 6-2, 6-8, 6-3, 3- 14-12, in a marathon first match, which was interrupted by rain on the previous day with Lal leading 4- in the third set.
