Police Call Off Strike

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) NEW YORK, May 3. A proposed strike that would have kept 80 per cent of New York’s 25,000 police patrolmen off the job was called off on Friday. The Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association assembly decided not to strike as union leaders continued. meetings with the Mayor (Mr John Lindsay) in an attempt to settle salary disputes. The city had previously obtained a court injunction ordering the policemen to keep working. The Mayor has proposed that the dispute be settled by the city’s office of collective bargaining. The city is still under the threat of a firemen’s walk-out. Firemen want contract changes based on whatever happens in the police negotiations.
