Bishop Grimes
Sir,—ln his article on the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament Terry McGoverne conveys an unflattering image of the late Bishop Grimes. In the panegyrie delivered at the Bishop’s funeral on March 25, 1915, Archbishop O’Shea said: “Bishop Grimes was nn ordinary man. He was endowed with qualities of head and heart above his fellows. He was a man of strong personality and of charming disposition, which made him friends everywhere, not only amongst his own people, but amongst people of all creeds and classes. He was a splendid administrator. He was thorough in everything he undertook. He was a man of wide sympathies who took an interest in many things outside those connected with the
.Catholic church. He had a (great love for New Zealand and predicted great success for it in the future. He took a lively interest in the city of Christchurch. He was the soul of hospitality.”—Yours, etc., A. H. W. HARTE. May 3, 1970.
