Carlton Pressed In Women’s Hockey

Fast, bumpy grounds lowered the standard of trapping in the second round of games in the senior women's hockey competition on Saturday. There were no surprise results, although the narrow winning margin of last season’s champion, Carlton, over inexperienced Rawhiti was unexpected. Results: Harewood 5, University 0. ■urnside 5, Dlgbys 3. Carlton 1, Rawhiti 0. Aranul S. Teachers* College 0. Points.—Carlton 2, Burnside. Harewood IJ, University, Aranui, Dlgbys 1, Teachers’ College, Rawhiti 0.

SPEED TO BALL Harewbod’s speed and willingness* to move to the loose ball gained it a comfortable win.

The game was played at a fast pace. The first half was even territorially, but Harewood scored two goals in this period. The first goal came after 15 minutes. Harewood mounted an attack on the University goal and L. Bayliss, leftinner, scored off a rebound. Shortly afterwards came a classic shot from L. Rutledge, right-inner. The Harewood forward line moved upfield. A. Lawrence, the centre-forward, passed right to Rutledge, who penetrated deep into the circle and pushed an angled shot into the net. In the second half. Harewood look command and looked much the better team. The side’s trapping improved and good use was made of possession. M Poulsen, at left-half, fed her forwards with good passes and intercepted well to regain possession. L. Bayliss and Rutledge combined well and were dangerous tn the circle. Harewood’s third goal came from a high shot from the circle edge by S. Howell the right wing. The remaining two goals came from Bayliss and Rutledge.

University was too slow to contain Harewood’s bustling attacks and quickly became disorganised. The forwards could not strike a combination that worked effectively and poor trapping did little to improve matters. Umpires: Mrs M. McGregor and Miss J. Bowyer. HIGH SCORING

The Burnside-Digbys game was played at a fast pace for the first half, but deteriorated in the second spell to aimless and misdirected hitting. Burnside opened the scoring after a long series of penalty corners, p. Rushbridge, the left wing, received the ball close to the circle edge and got in a hard shot which deflected into the net off a defender's stick.

Soon after the Burnside rightinner, J. Mouat. netted. Dlgbys scored two goals within a short period to equalise. This seemed to put more drive into Burnside's forwards and they scored two more goals in quick succession, one from Mouat and another from J. Phillipson, the centreforward. Burnside’s final goal came from Mouat, who was well, positioned to pounce on a ball close to the net. Fitness won this game for Burnside and full marks go to its players for their ability to turn quickly and chase when beaten for possession. J. Hardie and G. Gray, the inners. scored Digbys goals. Umpires: Mrs M. Gray and Miss B. Makinson. CLOSE GAME

Although the score shows Carlton the winner, full marks

must go to Rawhiti for playing the better game Only its inability to finish off attacking movements stopped Rawhtti winning. Carlton had several changes in team personnel. P. Carr moved from centre-half to leftinner, C. Jones played as left wing, and D. Fleming played as centre-half.

The strong right wing flank of A. Judson and M. Waapu was mostly cut out of play by the Rawhiti defence, but the only goal came after a solo run by Waapu.

Rawhiti's determination almost overcame its inexperience. The centre-half, L. Wright, with only school hockey games behind her. was well Sositioned to cut off passes and er trapping remained sound throughout the game. She received good support from her wing-halves, K. Marsh and M. Anderson. The Rawhiti backs. P. Allen and B. Kilroy, covered each other well, Allan, in particular, trapped with remarkable accuracy and cleared well. The Rawhiti goalie. S. Moloney, blocked very well and saved two goals. Umpires: Miss G. Bowyer and Mrs M. Gray. GOOD WIN Aranui combined well within the forwards to score a good win over Teachers’ College. The College players attempted to play constructive hockey and at times succeeded, but a tendency to make elementary errors spoilt chances to score. Scorers for Aranui were E. Fisher and S. Cowles (two each), and E. Green. The Aranui defence proved adequate to deal with College sorties, but it was not tried under any great pressure. Umpires: Mrs M. McGregor and Miss B. Makinson.
