Maori Culture At Royal Welcome
Sir,—At the public welcome , to the Queen and hei family I held at the show grounds on , March 16, 1 was very disgus- [ ted With the exhibition of . So-called Maori culture per- . forthed by pakehas in rain- , coats and grass skirts. We i have in our community very i eligible and enthusiastic , young Maori peopl. who can ; do. our culture perfectly, as was proved at the Queen’s ’ Maori welcome at Gisborne. If the occasion should arise again the organisers should contact the . appropriate people. By all means learn and practise our culture; but don't ridicule it, especially in front of your Queen.—Yours, etc., MAORI TANGA. ’ March 27, 1970. , [Lieutenant-Colonel R. E. Johnstone, commissioner of . the St John Ambulance Bri- : gade, which arranged the dis- . play, would not comment on 1 the letter.]
