INCOME TAX REFUNDS
Start Next Week The first income tax refunds to salary and wage earners would be sent out on April 21, the District Commissioner of the Inland Revenue Department (Mr C. K. Jones) said yesterday. The department had already received 2000 returns from taxpayers for the year ended March 31, and would deal with about 80,000 by the end of September.' Mr Jones .urged salary and wage-earners to file their returns as quickly as possible to avoid long delays in getting their refunds. Those who put in returns during the next month or so would have to wait about a fortnight but the delay after that would be more like a month to six weeks. To assist taxpayers in completing their returns the department has issued special brochures to all employers for distribution to staff. The brochures outline the expenses salary and wageearners are entitled to claim under the headings of clothing, tools of trade, education, reference books, journals and periodicals, use of the home for work, travelling, union and professional subscriptions. “We want people to claim for all. they are entitled,” Mr Jones said. Returns from previous years indicated that many people did not bother) to claim for union fees. 1
