Hospital Addition Plans Approved
Plans for the new $7.6m ward block and attached clinical services block at Christchurch Hospital have been approved by the Cabinet Works Committee, the chairman of the North Canterbury Hospital Board (Dr L. C. L. Averill) announced yesterday. Tender documents for the buildings are now being completed by the architects, Manson, Seward and Stanton. The ward block will have seven storeys, and with the four-storey clinical services block will be situated in the present hospital grounds just north of the existing buildings. The ward block will have about 370 beds. The other block, on its ground floor, will have a new department of physical medicine, combining occupational therapy and physiotherapy, and with a swimming pool, gymnasiums and workshops. On the second storey will be a new pharmacy and a new orthopaedic department; the third storey will contain a new X-ray department, and
the top storey wi If contain the department of medical physics and the medical unit from Princess Margaret Hospital. It will also have room for other clinical investigation units. All the units in the new block, with the exception of the one which will be moved from Princess Margaret Hospital, are now housed in Christchurch Hospital in very old accommodation which will be demolished after the move to the new buildings. Army Training An indoor study course will be held at Bumham Military Camp during the weekend which will confirm the pattern of Army training for the Southern Military District and the 3rd Infantry Brigade Group for the year ahead It will be directed by Brigadier D. J. Aitken, commander of the Southern Military District. About 80 Regular and Territorial officers will attend.
