MAGISTRATE'S COURT Driver Stole Clothing Worth $313 From His Employer

Eugene Gerald Ringdahl, 'aged 36, a truck driver (Mr M. J. Glue), was convicted. !and remanded on bail to I April 22 for sentence by Mr K. H. J. Headifen, S.M., in ; the Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of stealing 'from his employer on or : about March 25,33 dozen pairs 'of panty-hose valued at $313.50, a charge of receiving tinned food worth $8.42 on or about July 8 knowing it had been dishonestly obtained, and a charge of receiving household cleaners valued at $10.22 on or about March 8. He pleaded guilty to all charges. Senior-Sergeant F. G. Mulcare said the theft of pantyhose was reported to the i police on April 2 by C. H. Gwatkin and Company, Ltd, a cartage firm. On April 7 a person was interviewed by the police concerning bis possession of a large quantity of panty-hose, but he refused to name the person who had given it to him. The defendant was later interviewed and admitted taking the goods from his company’s truck which he was driving when he dis- : covered there was an extra oarton on board. He was convicted and remanded on bail to April 22 for sentence. The defendant’s house was searched, and when the goods were found he said they had been brought there by a friend. ONE YEAR'S GAOL "I am not prepared to treat these as washing-up charges,” said the Magistrate when sentencing Solomon Horomona Tau, aged 21, a workman, to one year's imprisonment on two charges of burglary at Kaiapoi on October 21 and December 8. The Magistrate said Tau was at present serving a six months sentence on charges of unlawfully taking vehicles. He had an extensive list of offences and had twice been to Borstal. NINE MONTHS PRISON Raymond David Marriott, aged 38, a cleaner, was sentenced to nine months prison on a charge of theft as a servant of several articles of clothing valued at 266, between February 24 and April 1. Marriott, who was not represented by counsel, pleaded for a lenient sentence. The Magistrate referred to Marriott's list of convictions, mainly of theft, since 1959. and said: “You just explain to me why you committed this offence while on probation you served a lengthy term of imprisonment. then were released on probation. , and fellow citizens by thieving . from them.’’ SENTENCED ON SIX CHARGES Appearing tor sentence on ' three charges of driving while disqualified, Brian Leslie Wendt, aged 21, a cable layer (Mr A. F. Wilding), was placed i your appreciation to the Court - on probation for three years and ordered not to own a motorvehicle in that period. His period of disqualification was extended for another three . years until February 4, 1976. On three charges of wilfully obstructing a traffic officer he was convicted and discharged. The Magistrate said that according to the probation officer's report. Wendt had no capacity to learn from' his mistakes. He had several periods of attending the periodic work centre on charges of driving while disqualified and had been imprisoned for failing to pay fines. PETROL THEFTS Richard Vernon Crocker, aged 17. a clerk, and Keri John Tomlins, aged 17, an apprentice shoe maker, pleaded guilty to four joint charges of theft of three gallons of petrol on March 21, and a charge of attempting to steal one gallon of petrol on the same date. They were convicted and remanded on bail to April 22 for sentence. Tomlins was remanded to the same date for sentence on a charge of theft of a ear name plate valued at 12.60 on March 21. Senior-Sergeant Mulcare said the defendants were among a group of five youths found In a car In Hackthorne Road at 2.5 am. on March 21. There were a number of containers of petrol in the back of the car. The defendants admitted siphoning petrol from cars to use on a shooting trip the next day. DEALER CONVICTED Hulstons Auction Rooms. Ltd. was lined $6O on a charge of falling to hold a second-hand article for one month before selling it, and 210 on a charge of failing to enter sufficient particulars in a register. A plea of gulltv on each charge was entered by the managing director of the firm. Clarence Beaumont Hall. On October 22 two transceiver field phones, commonly known as two-way radios, and worth 2200. were stolen from a truck in Christchurch, said SeniorSergeant Mulcare. On December 22 the field phones were recovered from a Mr Kelly and he aaid he had bought them from Hulstons Auction Rooms. The field phones were described on a purchase altp made out by Hall as “field phones," but were entered tn the register by Mrs Hall as “speakers." Mrs Hall admitted that she had no trouble reading her husband's writing, but could not explain whv she had recorded all the details from the purchase slip correctly except the description of the articles. The articles were sold by an employee of the firm. Raymond Leith, who said he knew the articles had not been held for a month as required. They were sold eight days before they should have been. Hall said that entering the articles in the register as "speakers” was a genuine mistake on the part of his wife. The man who sold the articles out of time said he had misread the date on the ticket. The Magistrate toM Hall that If there was any more trouble from him or any other dealer the Court would not hesitate to cancel the licence to carry on business as a dealer. ATTEMPTED BURGLARY Anthony Larry Roy Homo, aged 17, an unemployed machine operator <Mr R. F. B. Perry), was convicted and remanded on bail to April 22 for sentence on a charge of attempted burglary, to which he pleaded guilty. The police went to the premises of Vance Vivian, Ltd, when the alarm went off on the night of March 15, eaid SeniorSergeant Mulcare. Two hours later Memo was questioned and he admitted pushing on a set of double doors in the arcade and when the alarm bells started he made off. The alarm had in fact been set ofl by some other person attempting to open a showcase window, and inquiries were still being made on this matter, said Senior-Sergeant Mulcare. THEFT AS A SERVANT Robert Walker, aged 27, a van driver (Mr D. H. P. Dawson), charged with theft as a servant of leather and plastic goods worth 2111 from D. N. Russell and Company. Ltd, between January 21 and April 10 was convicted and remanded in custody to April 22 tor sentence. He pleaded guilty. Walker's home was searched after a complaint had been made about goods being stolen from the firm of D. N. Russell and the property was found in Walker's bedroom, said SeniorSergeant Mulcare. Walker would not make any explanation for the thefts. When Mr Dawson asked for ball the Magistrate said that in the public interest he would not allow ball. The oßence was a serious one. committed while Walker was still on probation and during that time he had been sent to a detention centre for interfering with a car. DEFERRED SENTENCE Lorna Phyllis Ewings, aged 41 a housewife (Mr D. J. Boyle), was ordered to come up for sentence within six months if ealled upon when she pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing grocer res valued at 81.96 from the Stanmore New World Supermarket on March 20. Senior-Sergeant Mulcare said the defendant was frank when interviewed by the police- She admitted it was her Intention to steal something when she went into the store. Mr Boyle s&id the defendant s lapse was partly the result of hw medical background and lack of confidence. It could be accounted for in no other way.

STOLE TYRE David Barry Mathias, aged 22, a wool presser, was fined $25 on a charge of stealing a tyre worth $27 from the Barrington Service Station in July or August last year. He pleaded guilty. The Magistrate said that as Mathias had been out of trouble since' 1965 he would be treated with some leniency. FIVE THEFT CHARGES Neville Wayne Robertson, aged 21. an oyster opener (Mr A. P. IC. Tipping), was released on probation for 18 months on each of five charges of theft from St George Atkinson. Ltd. between .November 1 and January 13. He 'was also ordered to make restitution of $98.72. 1 EXCESSIVE ALCOHOL Raymond Clive Neither, aged 22. a workman (Mr G. R. Lascelles). was fined $5O and disqualified from driving for six months on a charge of driving with an excessive amount of alcohol in his blood on February 27. He pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant Mulcare said Neither collided with another car al the intersection of Memorial Avenue and Clyde Road at 6.55 p.m. on February 27. INDECENT ASSAULT Robert John Steele, aged 42, a labourer (Mr A. P. C. Tipping), was released on probation for three years on a charge of indecently assaulting a girl, aged 11, at Christchurch on January A special condition of the terms of probation was that he should undergo any medical or other treatment as directed by the probation officer. DISCHARGED A man, whose name was suppressed (Mr J. G. Leggat), was discharged without conviction under section 42 of the Criminal Justice Act when he pleaded guilty to a charge of using insulting words on April 12. Senior-Sergeant Mulcare said the police had been called to a domestic dispute in Harewood about 12.5 a.m. The defendant had been drinking and used the words complained of as the police were leaving. Mortlock), was sentenced to detention centre training and ordered to pay restitution of $255 when he appeared for sentence on eight charges of forgery, eight charges of false pretences, a charge of theft and a charge of failing to report for periodic detention. The defendant had previously been remanded for a medical report for detention centre purposes. The Magistrate said that notwithstanding the defendant's age the Court would be justified in sending him to prison because of the number and gravity of the offences. Gillespie is also charged with the theft of 8231 b of brass rod, valued at $404.13. from Rosmak Industries, Papanui, on December 24 to 25.
