Rapid Rugby promotion
A SWIFT climb from the bottom of the Rugby ladder to the top in the space of six months is the unusual achievement of Mr B. G. Mcßeath, who is the coach of the Suburbs senior side this season. Last year Mr Mcßeath was in charge of the club’s kindergarten squad, which consists of youngsters who are being introduced to the game. This year he was asked to coach the senior reserve side but when the senior coach (Mr J. Gameson), was transferred to Blenheim, Mr Mcßeath was invited to step into the breach. “I decided that it was now or never, so I took it on,” be said this week. “It remains to be seen what I can do.” Mr Mcßeath played his early Rugby for Pirates in
Dunedin. Later, be played for Christchurch up to senior reserve grade, and then had half a season with Belfast But a broken shoulder led to him abandoning playing in favour of coaching. Among the men at Mr Mcßeath’s command are the Canterbury representatives, L. J. Davis, W. D. Cottrell and S. E. Cron. The side has lost the flanker, V. Baker, to Sydenham, and the first five-eighths, D. Moore, to Wellington, but has gained G. Blair, a lock from Union (Dunedin), B. Vintener, a first five-eighths from Mid-Canterbury and A. Dorreen, an 18-year-old full-back just out of Hillmorton High School “There is one thing you can be sure of—we will be playing an open style of Rugby,” the new coach promised.
