Polo The Amari Polo Club held a round-robin tournament at its grounds near Culverden recently. The three open teams competing for the Lochiel Cup were Ashburton, Ashley and Waimate, and with each team playing sis chukkas a day, those players with only two ponies found it taxing for their mounts. Ashburton ■was the winner, with Ashley runner up, while the Upper Highfleld Trophy was won by Amur! A and the Amur! Handicap by Amuri B. The Christchurch tournament will be held at Ryans Road on Saturday and Sunday, and with 10 teams competing, including players from Southland, some exciting polo should be seen. The final of the main game, for the Gould Cup, will be held on Sunday at 2.20 p.m. The Ashburton A team, the most successful side this season and the bolder of the Gould Cup for the last two years, will be the favourite. The teams in the handicap section will compete for the Rhodes Cup, while many players will be hoping to win the Rangitikei Polo Pony Trophy for the best team of ponies ridden by the owners. Loburn The horse events were most successful at the Loburn carnival and the night jumping session, and the well performed pair, Condor and My Word, once again took the champion ribbons. Zhivago, ridden by Mrs M. Harris, was the champion hunter. The lighting was not as good this year and it was to the horses’ credit that they jumped as well as

they did. Hunter's Moon won the Table A event, while last year’s winner of the Grand Prix, Handyman, again jumped well to take the honours. No changes The annual meeting of the junior committee of the Horse Society, held at Yaldhurst, brought no. changes in the officers. I. Bell, of Rakaia, remaihs president, D. Hutton, of Darfield, and Miss J. Inglis, of Kaiapoi, are vice-presi-dents, and Miss S. Nurse, of Yaldhurst, is secretary. Courses dealing with the training of young horses, advanced combined training, and preliminary combined training will be conducted by Miss J. Cresswell at the Baisweil Domain on April 18 to 19 and April 21 to 23. Impressed Many watched with interest the judging of the champion hacks, by Mr J. Wilson of Gore, at the Fairlie Show. The three finalists, Nightoall, Te Huia and Condor, were given a thorough work-out, being asked to work individually on both reins. Nightcall was awarded the champion ribbon and Condor, who worked very much better than Te Huia, was the reserve. These three horses are by Moorcock, who has really left his mark in the Canterbury show ring. Mr Wilson was also impressed with the winning pair of hacks, Yeti (H. Crowther) and Delmont Lad (Mrs A. McCully) and said that they were the best matched and performed pair he had seen in the show ring. Delmont Lad also added another hunter championship to his long list of successes.
