Answer From Minister
Comment on a reply by the Minister of Works (Mr Allen) to a request for an irrigation survey was made by Mr D. W. Mulholland, chairman of the Northern Central Plains Irrigation Committee, which yesterday made submissions at Darfield to the irrigation committee of the Water Allocation Council. Mr Mulholland said that the committee had written to the Minister on January 23, asking for the survey. The committee had recently written to the Minister, expressing concern that it had not had a reply. The committee had just received a letter from the Minister, in which he said he was surprised at the concern, because he believed that a press release by him on February 5 was a sufficient reply.
“You know you can’t necessarily believe all that you read in the newspapers,” said Mr Mulholland. “The press release was published in the ‘Star,’ an evening paper not largely circulated among farmers. An abridged report appeared in ‘The Press,’ which has a big circulation among farmers.
“The Minister’s letter which we have just received has quite a different tone from what was published In the ‘Star’.”
