ADDINGTON MARKET Sound Sale For Larger Entry Of Prime Stock

All classes of prime stock were in heavier supply at the Addington market yesterday, but values remained at sound levels.

Prime lambs were in larger supply than for some weeks, and values for the light and medium-weights were easier.

In the prime sheep section old ewes continued to sell particularly well, with regular sales at $6 or more. A good quality entry of prime cattle met a sound sale, at values fractionally easier on last week. Beef-bred vealers met a firm inquiry throughout, but plainer vealers were harder selling toward the end of the day. Prime Lambs Prime lambs were in heavier supply than for some weeks. The yarding rose from 960 last week to 2500. It included a large number of summer-shorn lambs, and a big entry from the West Coast. With the heavier entry, moat' of the light and medium lambs were a little easier on last weeks rates. The market throughout was erratic, with values fluctuating from par to 30c easier. The good butcher's lamb met a fairly sound sale throughout, with regular sales at more than $B. Values were:— Prime heavy lambs. 17.70 to 18.50. with several sales to $9. Prime Sheep Entries in the prime sheep section rose from 1260 last week to 4420. It was the largest yarding for more than a month. Adult ewes were in good supply, and there was also a useful entry of two-tooth ewes. As has been the case all season, young wethers were in limited supply. The old ewe market was again a sound one, with regular sales at $6 or more. Values were fully firm on recent rates. Twotooth ewes also met a firm sale, while most of the wethers showed little change. yarding was up to trade requirements. The heavier entry led to values opening a little easier on last week’s high rates, but the market held up well throughout. Heifers and cows were in larger supply, and the market was a sound one. Prime heavy steer beef sold to $23 per 1001 b, prime mediumweight from $23.30 to $25; prime heavy heifer beef to $23, prime medium-weight from $23.50 to $24.50; and cow beef from $l9 to $2l. sale was a strong one, with the top cow fetching $177. There was another sale at $155, two at $l4l, and a light-framed cow with twins at $lO5. AU the cows had their second or third calves at foot. The sole heifer in the offering made $l4l. Vealers At 175 head, the vealer yarding was back to its usual size. It included a good selection of beef-bred vealers and calves, and these sold well throughout. Plainer vealers and calves, however, had a harder sale as buyers filled their requirements and some were passed. Best vealers sold from $BB to $94, with odd sales of baby beef to $119.50: medium from $74 to $B2. and lighter from $63 to $7O. The best of the calves sold to $6B, medium from $55 to $6O. lighter $44 to $52, and very small from $32 to $3B. Bobby calves sold to $2O. Fat Pigs There was a medium entry in the fat pig section, but with some congestion at the works, buyers did not operate freely, and values for all classes were back slightly. Light porkers were again hard to sell, and only the best quality butchers’ porkers were firm on late rates. Heavy porkers and light baconers were easier, and medium and heavy baconers also sold at reduced values. Sixteen choppers were offered, and values were similar to last week. Values were:— Light porkers, $16.10 to $18.50. Medium porkers, $19.50 to $22.10. Heavy porkers, $23.60 to $25.60. Light baconers, $27.10 to $28.60. Medium and heavy, $29.40 to $33.30. Choppers, $22 to $36.50. Store Pigs The entry in the store pig section was much larger, and included some very good quality pigs. With a larger attendance of buyers, values improved on last week’s rates. Small weaners showed little change, but good quality weaners and slips were 40c to 80c a head better. Small stores were firm, but the few pens of medium and large stores were on a par with last week. Two in-pig sows realised $35. while three landrace boars sold up to $7O. A sow with litter of 10 made $55. Values were: Weaners, $5 to $6.80. Best weaners, $7.10 to $B.lO. Slips, $8.40 to $9.80. Small and medium stores. $10.20 to $12.60. Large stores, to $l4.
