‘PANORAMA OF FRAUD’
Men Sentenced In Victoria (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, April 6 Seven men convicted in the longest criminal trial in Victorian legal history were sentenced today to gaol terms totalling 21 years and nine months. After a 133-day sitting, a criminal court jury convicted the men of charges of conspiring to defraud two banks in three states of sl.2m. The longest sentence was imposed on a 42-year-old former company director, Robert Mitchell, who, the Judge said, was the “designer and dominating figure in this vast panorama of fraud.” The Judge said the fraud involved use of false cheques to create artificial credit in the banks. Mitchell last week lodged notice of his intention to appeal against a sentence. The trial of the conspiracy charges began on September 15 last year and the last man was convicted on March 28. Two men and a woman were acquitted. Crown law officials estimated that the trial cost $250,000 to hold.
