GAMES BID
Marathon Winner (N.Z.P.A. Staff Correspondent) LONDON. The former New Zealand three-mile champion, B. R. E. Jones, of Canterbury, has made a late bid for Commonwealth Games selection by easily winning a marathon race at Plymouth, in southern England last weekend. Running his first marathon and only his second race in 18 months because of injury, Jones beat a field of 69 other runners, and at the finish was 6min ahead of the runner-up, P. Hampton. His winning time was 2hr 24min 36sec. “I’ll have to do better if I am to get in the Games team, but it was a good time considering it was my first marathon, and considering the strong north-westerly wind and the hilly course,” Jones said.
