Grant For Lepers
In addition to a donation of $110,000.. towards the cost of building the f.t Twomey Memorial Hospital recently opened just outside Suva, the Lepers’ Trust Board has now undertaken to provide a swimming pool, tennis court and volley boards at an estimated cost of $6OOO. This decision honours an undertaking given last November when the board’s chairman (Mr A. S. Geddes), who died in Suva soon after, visited Fiji for the opening of the new hospital. “We agreed to provide these recreational facilities because they are desperately needed,” said the board’s secretary (Mr D. Douglas) yesterday. “It was not possible to include them in the original planning of the hospital as it was not then known whether the money could be made available or whether a suitable site could be found. Both these difficulties have been overcome and these amenities, so eagerly looked forward to by the patients, will be put in hand without delay.” Mr Douglas said that the swimming pool would be larger than the usual domestic type and would have the latest type of filtration plant.
