World Surf Difficulty

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE. The world surfboard riding championships on May 2 may have to be cancelled because Australia has failed to raise sufficient funds to run the contest. The president of the Australian Surf-rider’s Association (Mr A. Olsson) said yesterday that $22,000 still had to be raised by next Wednesday. Cancellation of the championships would cause a major loss of prestige, he said, and Australia would most likely be excluded from the International Surfing Federation. Australia would never again be allowed to hold the world championships and Australians would not be allowed to compete in international events, said Mr Olsson. The championships are to be held at Bell’s Beach, southeastern Victoria.
