Church Corner
Sir,—There is a real lesson to be learnt, by the authorities concerned, from the still uncontrolled intersection at Church Corner. The positioning of this “Give Way” sign on a major city artery astounds me. Surely a little more expenditure on traffic lights would be insignificant when added to the total cost of expanding and resurfacing the Main South Road. On late shopping night the cars were backed up to English Street, if not further at times, and the flow from Sockburn to Riccarton was reduced to a trickle. Traffic
those at the intersection at ’ Matipo Street and Riccarton ' Road. The sooner there is no , parking on the north side of Riccarton Road at this busy junction, the sooner we will ’ have correct use of the lanes recently marked.—Yours, etc., d. d. McMahon. March 25, 1970. [Mr W. A. Scott, resident engineer for the Ministry of Works, replies: "When the traffic lights at the Hansons Lane and Waimairi Road junction with Riccarton Road are operating, traffic flows will be much smoother. There will be stopping restrictions on both sides of Riccarton Road to give additional lanes through this heavily trafficked area. The ‘Give Way' against east-bound traffic on the Main South Road is to enable the right-turning traffic from Riccarton Road to Yaldhurst Road to get clear of the congested area and thus improve traffic flow. Traffic ' signals will no doubt be needed at Church Corner in : the future, and in fact some ducts have been laid to anticipation.. However, when i the present Improvements were designed, traffic volumes did not warrant signals at this stage.’’] ,
