"We Must Relinquish Freedom To Breed”
Man must lose the freedom to breed to save the human race. Professor G. A. Knox, professor of zoology at the University of Canterbury, told a meeting arranged by the Compost Society. About 130 persons attended.
There was a divergence, he said, between the rate of the population increase and the, ability of mankind to feed itself. “Our present population is expected to double by the year 2004 and the freedom to breed. I'm afraid, is one we must relinquish," he said. The United States was using a disproportionate amount of the world s resources, both in food and natural resources such as timber and iron ore, in comparison with the relatively small percentage (6 per cent) that the United States had of the world population. “This profligate use of the world’s resources is one thing which will condemn us,” he said. Professor Knox said that the comparison was the same as having a town of 1000 persons in which 64 were Americans and almost 600 were either Communist or Com-
munist dominated The 64 persons would have the greater part of the total earnings and would have more food than they could eat and would store it, at great expense. for themselves.
