Five United States marines have been charged with the murder of 16 South Vietnamese women and children in a village south of Da Nang on February 19, military spokesmen announced yesterday. The names of the marines and the village have not been disclosed. , A spokesman for the Ist Marine Division said that the men were members of a combat patrol working in the Que Son district, about 27 miles south of Da Nang. The alleged incident came to light, the spokesman said, when another patrol found the civilians' bodies and reported what they saw. An investigation was started and the men were subsequently charged. A headquarters spokesman said that the marines in that area had suffered frequent sniper fire and booby trap casualties.
