DUNEDIN.
Gay Doctor in the Caltex Gold Cup and Shewetta in the Provincial Handicap may be the winning double combination at Wingatui today when the Dunedin Jockey Club concludes its autumn meeting.
Gay Doctor has been a model of consistency in his recent racing and will be well suited by the distance. Sliderule, one of the most impressive gallopers in hack company, showed a return to form with a decisive win in the Gore Cup at his last start and might be his main rival.
Donald Mac, a good second i on Tuesday, will be another | strong chance in a particularly good field, which includes the form runners. , Trelay, Stranger, and Some- I light, which will be attempt- j ing to win his fifth race in I succession. Trelay was not tested in I his last two races, the South- | land Guineas, and the high- I weight event on the first day I of the Canterbury mid-sum- I mer meeting. Shewetta, a failure at the ] Wellington Cup meeting, showed stamina as well as J brilliance when she led all the way in the seven-furlong sprint on Tuesday: Back to her favourite distance of six 1 furlongs today she will keep B the opposition busy trying to c head her. Fresh runners at the meet- Jing include Baghdad Note p Mnd Bargain Hunter, both of f which are expected to make L bold efforts. v Baghdad Note is due to have his first race since the ’ Wellington winter meeting, i Bargain Hunter won two races before going to the | Wellington Cup meeting and c has freshened well since his J return from Trentham. 7 Mica set a track record at s the New Zealand Cup meet- ¥ ing in November when she i won the nine-furlong Riccarton Handicap and she ran her J best race since then when she c was second in the sprint at n Invercargill early last month. £ The weather has been fine ’ and the prospects are for a < firm track.
